The Problem at the First

Have you ever wanted to give up when you know that you did not have to? Have you ever given up when you know you did not have to? It seems an interesting phenomenon, giving up, calling it quits, whatever you want to call it. I think that a person often knows when they were defeated and when they gave up and defeated themselves- both involve failure, but both have very different feelings. One feels like a war with something outside of yourself and one feels like a war with self. But why would you war against yourself?

I think waring with yourself is a trap that many people fall into. I think it's mostly because we are consistantly confronted with our personality and so we feel we need to fight against it. But in reality the Lord is the One who fought the battle against our old nature, which is normally what we fight against.

When I here trap, I think that you mean to say that a person should not fight against his flesh and should give in to temptations and weaknesses. But I have met you and I really do not think that is what you mean to say.

I don't think this is necessarily a negative thing. Every time I set foot in the mountains I am at war with myself...every time I rock climb, run, or even just see another who needs my help I am at war with myself. A part of you will always desire to maintain the status quo -wherein lies sloth and placation.

It's disturbing the flat waters that allows us to discover what lies in the depths of our own abilities.

When I say trap, I mean that when people fight against temptations and weaknesses they often forget that the battle is already won. They often feel defeated and alone, but the truth is we are victorious and with Christ, as believers. That is where our strength should come.
